Borough of Lewisham

Lewisham is extremely well connected to The City and Canary Wharf and sits within the centre of the London Borough of Lewisham. Bordered by Hither Green, Ladywell and Blackheath, Lewisham has been transformed by extensive regeneration and significant investment, bringing in widespread improvement to the town centre, local parks, and infrastructure.

 

Did you know?
  • Lewisham was originally called ‘Levesham’ in Saxon times, meaning ‘the house among the meadows’.
  • The town centre is surrounded by some of South East London’s most iconic parks.
  • Designer Alexander McQueen was born in Lewisham.
  • August 1977 over 10,000 counter-demonstrators stood against 500 far-right National Front members, in what is now known as the Battle of Lewisham.
  • During World War Two Lewisham town centre was hit by a V-1 flying bomb, causing over 300 casualties and 51 fatalities.
  • Lewisham has the largest police station in Europe which is about 10,000m2.

 

Look out for

Clock Tower – Lewisham’s clock tower is an important historical monument in the area and was completed in 1900 in order to commemorate Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee in 1897

Manor House Gardens – Located in nearby Lee, with lake and fountain, as well as a walled flower garden

Ladywell Fields – This adventure playground is a great day out for the kids. Facilities include a sandpit, play area, athletics track, and an indoor games area

Hilly Fields Park – Complete with City views, café, and regular farmers market

Mountsfield Park – Boasting ornamental gardens, meadows, a bandstand, football pitch, tennis courts, ball court, and play areas. It also hosts the annual People’s Day festival

 

Shopping

A variety of bars restaurants and cafes are a popular destination in the High Street, along with Lewisham’s vibrant street market selling fresh fruit, vegetables, flowers, and clothing. The shopping centre features over 70 stores including leading national and local retailers such as Wilko, Sainsbury's, Footlocker, JD Sports, Argos, TK Maxx, Boots, Primark, Next, and Marks and Spencers.
